Dealing with a House Fire in Ontario: The Process (Part 1)

This August, I unfortunately had a fire burst in my neighbor’s unit. I was renting a condo in Ontario. The fire was an unexpected and a difficult experience. It has also taken a lot of effort on our side, lasting a few months where we were in between communicating with the insurance company, the landlord, and the property management. This post will be the first part where I share the experience with others.

The Fire

I was out shopping on a Sunday afternoon when at 2 PM when I received a crazy call from my roommate. He said a fire happened in our apartment. These were his words:

I was in my room when I saw a lot of smoke coming from the balcony. At first I thought someone was cooking with a BBQ, but then I realized there was way too much smoke. Someone knocked on the door and screamed “get out”. I put the dog on the leash and ran outside.

A few minutes after this, there was an explosion and a fire started at our neighbor’s apartment. All the residents were standing outside, worried about the situation.

A scene from the fire shortly after the explosion
